Sports injuries can occur during sports and athletic activities, ranging from minor to severe fractures. These injuries commonly affect muscles, ligaments, tendons, and bones. Many injuries can be treated at home, but major ones require medical treatment. These can be divided into two categories: chronic and acute injuries.
The following reasons can cause sports injuries.
A sprain is caused by stretching or tearing of ligaments. It is common in the wrist, ankle, and knee.
A strain refers to an injury to a muscle or tendon. It happens when a muscle or tendon is
overextended, stretched, or torn.
It happens when your knee gets twisted or hit too hard. It could range from a minor to a major tear of muscles, cartilage, ligaments, or tendons.
An injury that happens in the muscles and tendons of the rotator cuff. It can be due to sudden impacts and repetitive overhead motion.
Bone fractures can be caused by falls and by hitting an object with excessive force. These fractures affect the performance of athletes.
A concussion is a head injury resulting from a blow to the head, commonly seen in contact sports like football, rugby, and hockey.
It is a tendon located at the back of the ankle. An Inflammation or tearing of this tendon is Achilles tendonitis, often due to overuse or sudden movements.
It is caused by overstretching or tearing of muscles in the inner thigh area called the groin area, commonly occurring during activities that require quick side-to-side movements or kicking motions.
Your doctor performs a physical exam to diagnose a sports injury. They closely monitor the injured area. Depending on the type and severity of the injury, doctors may recommend imaging tests. These tests are CT scans, X-rays, or MRIs that can create images of the body’s internal structures. These images help to diagnose and treat the specific injury.
