How Is a Sports Injury Diagnosed?

Your doctor performs a physical exam to diagnose a sports injury. They closely monitor the injured area. Depending on the type and severity of the injury, doctors may recommend imaging tests. These tests are CT scans, X-rays, or MRIs that can create images of the body’s internal structures. These images help to diagnose and treat the specific injury.

In Mild Injuries

Rest: Give time to the injured part to heal and avoid the activities that aggravate the injury.

Ice: Apply ice packs or cold compresses for 15 to 20 minutes every few hours to reduce pain and swelling.

Compression: To stabilize the injured area and minimize swelling use compression bandages or wraps.

Elevation: Raise the injured limb or area above heart level to reduce swelling and promote drainage of excess fluid.
