What is Doppler Ultrasound?

Doppler Ultrasound is a procedure in which high-frequency sound waves measure blood flow in the circulatory system. It can produce images of blood, which show the speed and direction of blood through the veins, arteries, and organs in the body. It is done as an alternative to angiography.

Doppler Ultrasound is Used to Diagnose

Lincs Health can diagnose the following conditions:

  • Blood clots
  • Blood flow rate (fast or slow)
  • Narrowed or injured blood vessels
  • Tumors in the blood vessels

How Does a Doppler Ultrasound Work?

In a Doppler scan, a probe sends high-frequency sound waves into your body. These waves bounce off from the moving red blood cells in the blood vessels and return to the ultrasound device to be detected. The probe measures the echoes that bounce back from the moving cells. These echoes differ depending on the speed and direction of the cell’s movement.

Preparations For The Doppler Test

You may need to follow the instructions below before scan

  • Keep your stomach empty for selected hours before the Doppler test.
  • Stop smoking and avoid using nicotine products be 2 hours before the test because nicotine narrows blood vessels, which can affect the results.

When is a Doppler Ultrasound Done During Pregnancy?

Foetal Doppler scan is an imaging technique used in pregnancy to examine the fetal heart and blood vessels. It is essential in obstetrics because it is crucial to monitor the baby’s condition in high-risk pregnancies. At 32 weeks of pregnancy, a Doppler scan can detect the blood flow of different parts of the fetus such as the heart, umbilical cord, and brain. It can also detect some abnormalities often invisible in regular ultrasounds. This method is safe and highly accurate.

Results

Doppler scan results help doctors to diagnose the health of arteries and veins. In normal results, images show no issues, such as narrowing or closure of blood vessels, and the blood vessels have normal blood flow. If the sonographer finds any abnormality, the scan results are not good.
